GEC English Hymn

English Hymn 64

A mighty Fortress is our God,
A trusty Shield and Weapon;
He helps us free in ev’ry need
That hath us overtaken,
The ancient, bitter foe
Us seek to work woe;
Deep guile and greatest might
Are his dread arms in fight,
On earth is not his equal.

With human might can naught be done,
Soon were our loss effected;
But for us fights the Valiant One
Whom God Himself elected.
Ask ye now, Who is this?
Christ Jesus it is,
Of Sabbaoth the Lord,
And there’s no other God;
He holds the field forever.

Tho’ devils all the world should fill,
All watching to devour us,
We tremble not, we fear no ill,
They cannot over-pow’r us.
Tho’ this world’s prince may still
Scowl fierce as he will,
His rage we can endure,
For, lor his doom is sure,
One little word o’er-throws him.

The Word they still shall let remain,
And not a thank have for it,
He’s by our side upon the plain,
With His good gifts and Spirit.
Should they then take our life,
Goods, fame, child and wife;
And when their worst they’ve done,
They yet have nothing won,
The Kingdom ours reri1aineth.
